What is the LNAT?

The LNAT is used by universities to help assess applicants for undergraduate law. It is not a test of legal knowledge. Instead, it evaluates the reading, reasoning and argumentative skills required for studying law.

Strategy tip

Use the official practice tests wisely

The LNAT website provides official practice materials, including two official-style practice tests. These are valuable because they are the closest official benchmark available. We usually recommend saving them until you have built up stamina and practised with other high-quality questions first. If you use the official papers too early, you lose your best benchmark before you are ready to learn from it.

Why us

Why choose our resources?

Obviously we're biased, but we built LNAT Prepper because we could not find practice materials that matched the official test closely enough. We have worked with LNAT students since 2021 and have seen the same hurdles appear again and again: students understand the passage, but choose an answer that is too broad, too literal, too cautious, too extreme, or true but not actually answering the question.

Our practice tests are designed to force students to confront those exact mistakes. Each paper has gone through a detailed review process to check the range of passage lengths, the style of argument, the question types, the plausibility of distractors, the balance of correct answers, and the quality of explanations.

Why timed one-sitting practice is important

The main difficulty of Section A is not just understanding one passage. It is reading a large volume of unfamiliar argumentative text, holding the reasoning in your head, avoiding traps, and making accurate decisions under time pressure. That is why our full practice tests are designed to be completed in one sitting, timed at 95 minutes, with 42 questions across 12 passages.

Calibrated to the harder official style

The two official practice tests published on the LNAT website were taken from the 2010 cycle. Published score tables list the 2010/11 average at around 17.7 out of 42, while recent years have seen averages around 22-24 out of 42.  This suggests that the tests seen in recent years may be slightly less challenging than the official 2010 papers, BUT our aim is deliberate: to give students practice that feels at least as demanding as the most challenging official materials, so the real exam feels manageable!

Score figures are taken from published historic LNAT score tables; exact averages vary by year and cohort.

Why our LNAT Section A papers use 4 options (rather than 5)

The two official LNAT practice papers which are currently on the LNAT website use 5 answer options. The real test now uses 4 possible answers per multiple-choice question. LNAT Prepper therefore uses 4 options throughout, so the format matches the updated test.

AFTER THE TEST

What happens after completing a test?

After completing an LNAT Prepper paper, students receive detailed explanations of why the correct answer is correct, why the others are wrong, and your personal areas of improvement. We explain why the tempting wrong answers fail, including common traps such as:

  • Choosing a true statement that misses the question
  • Treating an example as the whole argument
  • Confusing a premise with the writer's conclusion
  • Making assumptions about the argument
